This Chocolate Avocado Mousse is rich, creamy, and quietly surprising. Deep cocoa flavor takes center stage, while ripe avocado lends silkiness without announcing itself. It’s a dessert that feels indulgent first and thoughtful second — perfect for candlelit evenings and unhurried conversation.
Why We Love It
Avocado provides a naturally smooth base, allowing cocoa and citrus to shine without heaviness. Maple syrup adds warmth, while orange zest lifts the chocolate, creating a mousse that feels both decadent and balanced.
Ingredients
2 ripe avocados, peeled and pitted
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
⅓ cup pure maple syrup (to taste)
¼ cup full-fat coconut milk or heavy cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
Zest of 1 orange
Pinch of flaky sea salt
Mise en Place
Ensure avocados are fully ripe for the smoothest texture. Measure all ingredients before blending for even flavor and consistency.
Avocado Prep Note
Choose avocados that yield gently to pressure but are not overly soft. Overripe avocados can introduce bitterness and dull the mousse’s clean chocolate finish.
Method
Place all ingredients in a food processor or high-speed blender.
Blend until completely smooth, scraping down the sides as needed.
Taste and adjust sweetness or cocoa to preference.
Spoon into serving glasses or small bowls.
Chill for 30+ minutes for a firmer, more mousse-like texture.
Make It Your Own
Try including a pinch of warm Mexican spices — such as ancho chile, or a touch of espresso powder — to deepen the chocolate. A few drops of orange bitters can also be added to elevate and refine the citrus notes.
This mousse is irresistible on its own, but when prepared without the orange enhancement, it benefits beautifully from preserved cherries. (Filthy Cherries create a super-luxe flavor profile.)
Finish with toasted crushed pistachios and chocolate wafer straws — and voilà.
Garnish
With zested orange peel, dark chocolate shavings, and a small pinch of flaky sea salt
Suggested Plating
Serve in coupe glasses or small bowls. This is the type of dessert to pull out your treasured vessels. Keep portions modest — this mousse is rich and satisfying. For entertaining, place on a tray with small spoons and let guests linger.
Suggested Wine Pairings
Tawny Port – nutty, warm, and complementary
Ruby Port – fruit-forward and vibrant
Late-Harvest Zinfandel – lush and dessert-friendly
